Short Description of the structure
The EP Santomasi Foundation located in the heart of the ancient city is the result of the testamentary dispositions of a nobleman who, after his death on 7/12/1917, thanks to the bequest placed in favor of the City, was erected in Moral Institution in 1920, with RD 1761 of 11/28/1920. Among the seven rooms of the apartment on the first floor there is in particular the reception hall, with eighteenth-century furniture and painted "coffered" wooden ceiling, the bedroom with inlaid seventeenth-century drawers and a rich canopy of the sixteenth century and, finally, the private chapel with a wooden altar from the 18th century. On the second floor it is possible to follow the archaeological path, divided into two different sections: one owned by the Foundation, the other on permanent loan by the State. Still on the second floor, the route can continue with the display of 1608 coins belonging to different periods and civilizations (Greek, Roman, Byzantine, medieval and modern) and which testify to the phases of minting and circulation; among these it is worth mentioning the Augustale coined under the reign of Frederick II of Swabia, with the image of the sovereign in imperial guise. The exhibition of the weapons and uniforms, chronologically ordered in three groups from 832 to 1918, is followed by paintings in the art gallery, which can be traced back to artists from different eras and schools, among whom the paintings by Francesco Guarino and the autograph deserve particular interest. S. Sebastiano by Ludovico Carracci, from 1599. The collection of locally made majolica and Laterza, as well as those from Castelli, produced by the famous ceramists (Grue, Cappelletti and Gentile), together with the exhibition of period clothes (XVII- 19th century) set on the ground floor, offering a significant showcase of trends in taste and fashion through the centuries. Also on the ground floor it is possible to admire the Byzantine-style frescoes from the rock church of S. Vito Vecchio. Detached towards the end of the fifties of the last century, restored, they have been inserted into a new environment that reproduces the original enclosure of the crypt, dominated by the imposing figure of Christ Pantocrator enthroned and blessing, carried in flight within one almond from four angels, and some theories of saints placed within small arches.
