Short Description of the structure The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the main place of worship of Gravina in Puglia, concathedral of the diocese of Altamura-Gravina-Acquaviva delle Fonti. This church was destroyed between 1447 and 1456, first due to a fire and then to the earthquake that shook the entire region. It was expected thirty years for its reconstruction. Protruding from the left aisle and overlooking the ravine is the so-called capellone, built in the first half of the Seventeenth century, two floors: on the lower floor is the oratory of the Holy Cross, once the site of the homonymous brotherhood; to the upstairs, at the cathedral level, is the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. The interior of the church has three naves divided by columns with bare capitals. The ceiling is in carved and gilded wood, in baroque style: four large canvases were applied to it in the seventeenth century. There are several side chapels, including the one dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, patron saint of the city. The construction of the external ramp is recent, which allows access to the disabled from the main entrance.
