Short Description of the structure
The Cathedral dates back to the second half of the year 1000, and was built on ancient remains of Messapian, Roman and early Christian villages. has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. The main attraction inside the Cathedral is the mosaic floor made by the monk Pantaleone and finished in 1164, in fact it represents the tree of life, and the passages recounted by the Old Testament, which tell of the journey that man carries out to resolve himself from sin and seek eternal salvation. The crypt, built in the 11th century, is much older, and represents one of the most interesting parts from the architectural point of view of the entire structure. It is in fact the oldest of the Apulian crypts. The particular conformation of the crypt, divided into 5 naves and 72 between columns and pillars. Each of these has its own quality and provenance of marble and granite, and several Ionic, Corinthian, Byzantine and Islamic capitals.
