Short Description of the structure
The sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo is located in Monte Sant'Angelo, in the province of Foggia. It has the dignity of a minor basilica. It is part of the serial site "Longobardi in Italia: the places of power", including seven places full of architectural, pictorial and sculptural evidence of Lombard art, inscribed on the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in June 2011. The structure of the Sanctuary is constituted by an upper level and a lower level. On the upper level there are the Romanesque portal and the bell tower. The bell tower is also called the Angevin tower in that it was erected by Charles of Anjou as thanks to Saint Michael for the conquest of southern Italy and is modeled according to the scheme of the towers of Castel del Monte. The lower level includes the cave, which is accessed directly from the Angevin staircase, the devotional museum and the crypts. The statue of the Saint in Carrara marble was sculpted by Andrea Sansovino and is dated 1507. The sculptor depicts Saint Michael the Archangel holding a sword in his right hand. Inside the cave, in addition to the statue of the saint, there is the episcopal chair and the statue of Saint Sebastian. The crypts are found in environments of Longobard age and served as an entrance to the cave. The entrance to the cave and the museums is guaranteed by an elevator from the nearby Casa del Pellegrino.
